NeWt was formed in the summer of 2006 in Edinburgh, Scotland, bringing together three of the country’s top modern creative musicians. With weekly get togethers in their musty basement studio the group quickly began building up a vast repertoire of original material and an entirely unique approach and sound. The group blend densely complex composition with uninhibited free improvisation and fearless use of electronics and effects.
In their 15 year history they have released 3 critically acclaimed albums, collaborating with top German improviser Silke Eberhard on their 2010 release “NeWt 2” on F-IRE Records. Their 2014 CD/DVD multi-media release “NeWt North” was premiered and recorded live at the Shetland Jazz Festival to rave reviews. In 2012 they were awarded the Scottish Jazz Ensemble of the year honour. NeWt have toured the UK extensively and performance highlights include opening for Bill Frisell at the Queen Elizabeth Hall for the 2011 London Jazz Festival, playing a double bill alongside the Tommy Smith Quartet at the 2011 Ronnie Scott’s Brit Jazz Festival, appearing in the Made in the UK showcase series at the 2012 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival and playing the Roundhouse at the 2012 TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
Their latest release entitled “Drip” brings the trio back together after a 5 year hiatus and features Toronto bandleader, multi-instrumentalist and composer Johnny Griffith on alto saxophone, bass clarinet and synthesizers.
